Barbara Lee George was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the youngest of three children. Barbara's parents, Margo and Frank George, met in a music store and as Margo climbed a latter to retrieved some sheet music for Frank... Frank heard wedding bells. Over the next 6 years, as the George family grew, so did the musical influences. Margo introduced her children to jazz as she was the Hostess of Birmingham's Live Jazz radio show and Frank introduced Barbara and her brother to classical music, as he was the Associate Conductor and Manager of the Birmingham Pop Symphony Orchestra.
Consequently Barbara's introduction to music was quite diverse. At the age of nine, Barbara wrote her first classical composition on her first instrument, the piano. She soon began experimenting with different genres. To date, Barbara has written scores of songs in a variety of genres; pop, rock, jazz, blues, R&B, symphonic, reggae, country and calypso, on a variety of instruments; piano, violin, mandolin and guitar.
In 1990 New York's environmental organization, Orange Environment, adopted one of Barbara's compositions, "The Earth Anthem" as their official Earth Day Anthem. That same year she was nominated for a United Earth/Nobel Prize for this song as well as her children's book, which she wrote and illustrated to encourage children to embrace their cultural diversity as well as the diversity of our Universe
April 22, 2010, Barbara released a revised edition of her children's book with a live reading at the Rose Center For Earth And Space at the New York's Hayden Planetarium in the American Museum of Natural History. This spectacular book is replete with images from NASA and of course the status Pluto has been updated to "Plutoid". Her happily orbiting, whimsical characters rhyme in time as they compare the planets and ultimately the Sun answers the question..."What makes the Earth so special?" "People!" Said the Sun. "Earth Day a Universal Bedtime Story" is a MUST READ for pre-school through 3rd grade.
Barbara's
current recording and new CD, "Protected By
Love" is scheduled for release early fall of 2010.
July 2010 Barbara Lee George and Even
Steven Levee, her bassist and musical producer completed her latest
CD project "Protected By Love" (to be released to the public in August).
This CD is simply a work of art from the 10 tracks of original compositions
(arguably a hit in every genre) to its cover art, contributed by the internationally
renowned contemporary cubistic artist, Yuroz.
It's apparent that Barbara's early exposure to brilliant musicianship and
her well-trained ear are completely apparent when you hear the performance
of her fellow musicians. This group is a musical tour de force that begs
to be heard live! Barbara Lee George "Protected By Love"
